The first Tanzanian edTech (SmartClass) selected for Google Start-ups Accelerator Africa 2022 rebrands to Silabu and launches a new mobile app.

The leading Tanzanian edTech start-up SmartClass became the first Tanzanian edTech start-up to be selected to join the prestigious Google for Start-ups Accelerator Africa 2022. While participating in the seventh class of the Google for Start-ups Accelerator Africa, SmartClass leverages Google’s technologies and people to scale.

After using SmartClass as a brand name for the past two years, it now rebrands to Silabu. We feel that our previous brand name SmartClass is somewhat diluted by its usage in many start-ups, specifically in education and related industries. Therefore, it has been hard for our esteemed customers to distinguish us from competitors with a similar name.

Our vision, mission, and passion for education will remain unchanged despite the rebranding. Silabu envisions helping every aspiring learner, teacher, and school throughout Africa realize their full potential. Silabu embarks on the mission of creating curious and engaging minds across Africa and beyond.

Silabu uses technology to build an exciting educational product and solve Africa’s biggest learning challenges with massive potential to contribute to the billion-dollar African tech economy. Today, a tiny fraction of African youths can learn academic subjects or new skills from exceptional teachers, experts, and top schools at a high price. At the same time, there is a shortage of enough outstanding teachers, experts, and top schools to address the learning needs of Africa’s 700M youths. So, we envision blending concepts that are proven winners from peer-to-peer learning, group tutoring, and one-to-one tutoring as a better way to learn, reduce costs of learning, and overcome the shortage of exceptional teachers in Africa.

Silabu will launch the first unique and one of its kind EdTech mobile app in Africa in May 2022. Living on its vision and mission of solving Africa’s biggest learning challenge, Silabu’s mobile app aims to empower students to learn from each other, attend the live group classes created by one percent of top tutors, and request tutors for one-to-one tutoring. The app will enable students to create learning groups for free in 30 seconds and start learning from like-minded students (peer-to-peer learning) from across Africa. That means that students will never learn alone or get bored anymore when studying. Peer-to-peer learning will allow students to learn with other talented students and like-minded learners from top schools to master critical concepts at zero cost. Strong students who help other students during peer-to-peer discussions will better understand and master complex concepts while helping their colleagues catch up.

Learning from peers helps students with no best teachers or who cannot afford expensive fees from top schools to indirectly learn from the best teachers away from their school at zero cost. We believe that the best educational practices will spread quickly to every learner. While in peer-to-peer learning groups, students can book exceptional and verified tutors on-demand in 40 seconds to help them understand complex concepts.

On Silabu, top teachers and schools will be able to start their educational groups in less than a minute to teach thousands of students in their groups and make high-quality education accessible and affordable to every aspiring learner. Silabu has made it easy for top tutors and schools to collect payments, manage attendance, share learning materials, launch quizzes, and teach online via an in-built interactive video infrastructure. Silabu’s video infrastructure also allows the audio-only option, enabling students with poor internet to attend live classes. Furthermore, we built Silabu’s mobile app to become a go-to logistics partner for exceptional teachers/schools. The app will do all the heavy lifting while allowing the teachers/schools the freedom and space to focus their creative energies and efforts on teaching students. With such software, Silabu will help exceptional tutors teach thousands of students beyond their classroom and make every teacher a global teacher!

We have been closely working with top tutors in the past two years, and we value their knowledge, and we want them to reach millions of students across Africa and beyond. That means exceptional teachers will monetize their talents and expand their revenue streams by teaching millions of students beyond their classroom. Our goal is to enable established and aspiring teachers across Africa to pursue their passion and improve their standard of living. Our app will help top tutors and schools grow, manage, and monetize their educational groups in the best possible way. The app will eliminate the hassle the best tutors like Maxwell Chimedza from Zimbabwe encounter while trying to monetize their classes across multiple platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram. On Silabu, everything happens under one roof. So, we envision making it easy for top teachers to start their standalone digital schools in a few seconds. We are taking on this because it will be one of the most prominent trends in the education space over the next decade.

Traditionally, schools in Africa have only been able to teach students within their classrooms despite having resources such as excellent teachers and content. On Silabu, schools will be able to bring their classes online and teach students beyond their classroom to create dynamic communities of learners that can reach their full potential. Through Silabu, schools can launch free and paid classes. The price can be up to six times cheaper than school fees for paid classes, which holds a great promise to help students from low economic backgrounds.

While we introduce peer-to-peer learning and group tutoring, we still retain the core functionality of one-to-one tutoring that our users love, where students can book top tutors in 40 seconds. One-to-one tutoring helps students achieve their learning goals with personalized assistance from qualified, well-vetted, experienced tutors from the best universities in Tanzania.
